hur Cuckoo's Progress kom till
Cuckoo’s Progress skrevs direkt på engelska under 60-talet och gavs ut i USA 1971 och i Storbritannien följande år. Historien om utgivningen är nästan lika spektakulär som en Sture Dahlström-roman och det finns en hel del skrivet om turerna runt utgivningen på annat håll för den som är intresserad.
Utgåvan var full av fel och omslagsbilderna lämnade minst sagt en del att önska. Sture var frustrerad över det mesta runt utgivningen och efter ett antal turer med andra förlag och ett avbrutet filmprojekt med Sam Peckinpah skrev Sture istället om berättelsen på svenska. Resultatet blev Gökmannnen, Dahlströms kanske mest kända verk.
Vi är många Sture Dahlström-fans som varit nyfikna på Cuckoo’s Progress och Stures sätt att berätta på engelska, men tyvärr är de få överlevande exemplaren av pocketutgåvorna svåra att få tag på och man får räkna med att betala tusentals kronor för ett gulnat exemplar.
Historien om den här utgåvan börjar precis så. Ett sug efter att få uppleva Sture Dahlström berätta på engelska. Efter år av sökande efter gamla exemplar och tjat på förlag att ge ut Cuckoo’s Progress, så dyker ett exemplar upp i en gammal stående antikvariatssökning på nätet. 3600:- var priset… ”Oj, det får jag nog fundera på över lunchen” tänkte jag. Jag skrev snabbt och berättade om fyndet för Jocke, en bekant som är ett av landets största Sture Dahlström-fans. Han svarade direkt. ”Din jävla idiot. Du kan beställa handlindade gitarrmickar från nån snubbe i Jönköping för tusentals kronor, men när Cuckoo’s Progress till slut dyker upp så tvekar du.” Hans enkla och tydliga budskap fick önskad effekt. Jag insåg att jag varit en komplett idiot som tvekade och kastade mig över datorn för att köpa boken så snart jag kom tillbaka från lunchen.
Borta… Jag berättade för Jocke att den redan var såld, som krasst konstaterade att jag väl får vara snabbare nästa gång det dyker upp ett exemplar.
Efter några veckor berättade Jocke att det var han som hade köpt boken för att lära mig en läxa, men att jag förstås skulle få köpa den av honom. Men innan Jocke hann posta boken till mig, så började vi diskutera om man inte borde försöka få den utgiven, så att alla andra som var nyfikna på Cuckoo’s Progress fick läsa den utan att behöva leta i åratal efter gamla gulnade samlarobjekt för tusentals kronor.
Sagt och gjort. Vi kontaktade upphovsrättsägarna och fick klartecken att ge ut en liten begränsad upplaga. När produktionsarbetet var i det närmaste klart följande år, berättade en av Sture Dahlströms familjemedlemmar att det fanns ett exemplar av boken som Sture Dahlström hade gjort rättningar i, och som vi kanske borde titta på innan vi gav ut vår nyutgåva.
Under letandet efter det gamla exemplaret i Dahlström-arkivet upptäcktes ett komplett maskinskrivet manuskript, rättat och omarbetat av Sture Dahlström själv. Alltså den slutliga engelska versionen av Cuckoo’s Progress, en version som aldrig blev utgiven. Jag isade till när jag fick höra om fyndet.
Vi dumpade utan att tveka versionen vi hade arbetat på och började om från början med det nya materialet. Manuskriptet var layoutat som en stor bok och vi valde förstås att behålla Sture Dahlströms layoutidéer, styckeindelning, val av skiljetecken och så vidare, fast anpassat till ett standardiserat romanformat.
Sture Dahlström skriver själv följande i det man skulle kunna kalla hans litterära testamente:

Kan ev. ges ut i Olympia Press utgåva, men om jag hinner ska jag plocka ihop mitt eget original.
Nu vet vi att han hann innan han gick bort och Stures rättade och omarbetade version av Cuckoo’s Progress kom till slut ut lagom till det som skulle blivit hans 100-årsdag den 28:e december 2022.
Vi som arbetat med projektet hoppas att ni läsare kommer att uppskatta Cuckoo’s Progress lika mycket som vi har gjort under arbetet med utgåvan. Vi har valt att hålla en låg profil, eftersom vi är helt ointressanta i sammanhanget. De enda som är intressanta i det här projektet är Sture Dahlström, Xerxes Sonson Pickelhaupt, Leon, Nurse och de andra figurerna i berättelsen.

how Cuckoo's Progress came about
Cuckoo's Progress was written during the 60’s by Sture Dahlström. Unlike the Swedish author’s previous work, it was written in English rather than his native language Swedish. The novel was published in the USA in 1971 and in the UK the following year. The story of the publication is almost as spectacular as a Sture Dahlström novel and there is plenty written about all the craziness surrounding the publication of Cuckoo’s Progress elsewhere for those who are interested.
The two original issues were full of errors and the cover images were, should we say, less than carefully chosen… Sture was frustrated with most things about the publication and after dealing with court cases, new publishers asking him to alter the story completely and an interrupted film project with Sam Peckinpah, Sture Dahlström rewrote the story in Swedish to become Gökmannnen, Dahlström's perhaps best known work. Eventually it became a success and Dahlström continued to wrote his novels in Swedish for the rest of his life.
We are many Sture Dahlström fans who have been intrigued by Cuckoo's Progress and Dahlström’s way of telling stories in English, but unfortunately the few surviving copies of the original paperback editions are hard to come by and you can expect to pay hundreds of dollars, pounds or euros for a worn copy.
The story of this release begins just like that. A desire to experience Sture Dahlström’s storytelling in English. After years of searching for old copies and nagging publishers to publish Cuckoo's Progress, a copy turns up in an old standing antiquarian search online. 3,600 Swedish Kronor was the price... "Oh, I'll have to think about that over lunch," I thought. I quickly wrote and told Jocke, an acquaintance who is one of the country's biggest Sture Dahlström fans, about the find. He answered immediately. “You fucking idiot. You can order hand-wound guitar pickups from some guy in Jönköping for thousands of kronor, but when Cuckoo's Progress finally shows up, you hesitate." His simple and clear message had the desired effect. I realized I'd been a complete idiot for hesitating and rushed back to my laptop to buy the book as soon as I got back from lunch.
Gone... I told Jocke that it had already been sold, who pointedly stated that I probably need to be faster the next time a copy appears.
After a few weeks, Jocke told me that it was he who had bought the book to teach me a lesson, but that I would of course be welcome to buy it from him. But before Jocke sent the book to me, we started discussing if we perhaps should try to get it published, so that everyone else who was curious about Cuckoo's Progress could read it without having to search for years for an old yellowed collector's items costing hundreds of dollars, pounds or euros.
Said and done. We contacted the copyright owners and got the go-ahead to release a small limited edition. When the production work was almost finished the following year, one of Sture Dahlström's family members told us that there was a copy Cuckoo’s Progress in the archive that Sture Dahlström had made corrections to, and that perhaps we should have a look at these notes before publishing our new edition.
During the search for the old copy in the Dahlström archive, a complete typewritten manuscript was discovered, corrected and revised by Sture Dahlström himself. The final English version of Cuckoo's Progress, a version that was never released. I froze when I heard about the find.
Without hesitation we dumped the version we had been working on and started over with the new material. The manuscript was laid out like a large book and we decided to keep Sture Dahlström's layout ideas, paragraph division, choice of punctuation and so on, but adapted to a standardized novel format.
Sture Dahlström himself wrote the following in what could be called his literary testament:
"Cuckoo's Progress" – Gökmannen”
Can possibly be published in the Olympia Press edition, but if I have time I will try to assemble my own original.”
Now we know he made it before he passed away and now Sture's corrected and revised version of Cuckoo's Progress was finally released in time for what would have been his 100th birthday on the 28th of December 2022.
We who have worked on the project hope that you readers will appreciate Cuckoo's Progress as much as we did during the work on the release. We have chosen to keep a low profile, because we are completely uninteresting in the context of Cuckoo’s Progress. The only people of interest in this project are Sture Dahlström, Xerxes Sonson Pickelhaupt, Leon, Nurse and the other charachters in the story.
